The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating the body’s metabolism, energy levels, mood, and many other bodily functions. A sluggish thyroid gland can lead to fatigue, weight gain or loss, depression, & cognitive impairment.

What causes thyroid disorders:

  • Autoimmune Conditions: Autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease are major reasons. In Hashimoto’s, also called Hypothyroidism or chronic thyroiditis, the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to slow down leading to hair fall, skin dryness & weight gain. In Graves’ disease, also called hyperthyroidism or toxic diffuse goitre, is an immune system disorder that results in overproduction of thyroid hormones that may cause fatigue, increased heartbeats, and weight loss.
  • Iodine Deficiency: Lack of iodine in the diet can lead to thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism.
  • Thyroid Nodules are abnormal growths or lumps in the thyroid gland and can disrupt the normal functioning of the thyroid gland causing hormone imbalances.
  • Genetic Factors: Thyroid disorders may have a genetic predisposition and women are seven times more at risk as also genetic mutations lead to thyroid conditions.
  • Radiation Exposure: Radiation therapy or environmental factors as nuclear accidents can damage the thyroid gland and lead to thyroid disorders.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnancy can trigger thyroid disorders, particularly postpartum thyroiditis-temporary inflammation, leading to hyperthyroidism/ hypothyroidism.
  • Chronic stress affects thyroid function indirectly by disrupting the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis creating hormone imbalance.
  • Other Medical Conditions like pituitary disorders, chronic illnesses, chronic fatigue syndrome, may affect thyroid function.
